Gondor Quilt – Modern Version

I wanted to make a black and white version modern (yardage) version of the Gondor Quilt pattern so that the geometric design could really stand on its own. I started out wanting a classically bold, but subtle look.

I went with the solids Kona White & Magnetism from AGF. Kona White is a bright crisp white. Kona Snow is more of a subtle off white. If you wanted less contrast and a slightly less bold look, you could go with Kona Snow. Magnetism is a fabulous solid that is a very deep charcoal grey, but not quite black. I am a massive fan of AGF Magnetism.

This is only my second ever all solid quilt. It is also my second black and white quilt. This quilt is a little out of my usual look and comfort zone, but I really love it.

Picking out the backing was hard because I don’t usually work in this color range. I almost bought a LOT of different backings. I usually use my husband as a sounding board for fabrics when I am unsure, because he has fabulous quilt fabric taste. He suggested a metallic gold backing and I was like “oh my gosh yesssssss”. We ended up using a metallic gold print from Rifle Paper Co. for the backing. Why have I never used a metallic gold backing before??? It is so cool. It kind of killed my subtle neutral vibe and started a more elegant vibe for the quilt.

I sent the quilt off to Prairie Folk Quilt Co for long arm quilting. We discussed some options and ended up going with the ‘Palm Fronds’ pantograph to give the whole thing an art deco type feel.

I used the same solid in Magnetism for the binding. It really frames the quilt. I went with a bright white thread and big stitched the binding by hand. I was worried it would kill the elegant vibe a little, but I think it makes it look even more bold.

This quilt feels too classy and elegant for me and my home, but I seriously love it. Expect more bold and geometric quilts from me in the future!

The Gondor Quilt pattern is now available for purchase here.
