Gondor Quilt – FQ Version

This quilt is the first version of the Gondor quilt pattern I ever made. I wanted to start with the fat quarter version of the quilt pattern because it gives a really ‘curated scrappy’ look. It looks scrappy, without actually being scrappy. Which is great because it is easier to plan and cut out, but it still gives you that homey scrappy lovey quilt feel.

I wanted to go with white, pink, blue, and golden colors with quirky fabrics. I have been pulling versions of this fabric pull for about a year, but it just didn’t feel right for whatever project I was making. When I pulled the fabric for the Gondor quilt, it finally felt right.

I went really big with this quilt. I have been wanting to make two twin sized quilts for when my husband and I go on our camping road trips. Sometimes the hotel blankets are really thin or the tent gets freezing in the desert, for various reasons it is always nice to have a quilt or two. I really wanted a specially made road trip quilt for each of us. This one is mine. I even made it with fabrics and colors I thought could potentially hide some of that red desert dirt (no white solids & no light backing).

I wanted a cozy camping quilt that really felt like me. My favorite colors are blue, pink, and yellow and I am the biggest fan of quirky fabric ever. This quilt has fabric with: giraffes, llamas, sheep, more llamas, woolly mammoths, dinosaurs, moons, bears, deer, birds (maybe doves?), Peter Pan fabric, nuts, and the state wild flowers. This quilt is like a Where’s Waldo of adorable nature themed fabric and I am super into it.

This is a massive twin sized quilt that I plan to drag all over the country so I wanted a long armer to quilt it. Since the front is scrappy and the quilt was going to be long armed I wanted a solid for the back. I did not want a light color because I wanted the quilt to be able hide dirt and potentially stains. I went with Mediterraneo Pure Solid from AGF. It is a super gorgeous teal-ish blue.

I sent the quilt off to Prairie Folk Quilt Co. for long arming. Since the quilt has so many geometric edges, I wanted something curvy. I didn’t wants swirls, I thought it would make it too girly. I wanted something that was curvy and would make it feel even more homey. We went with the ‘Sweater Weather’ pantograph and decided to match the panto width to the hexagon width. I love the effect and I can not recommend Prairie Folk Quilt Co. enough.

I went a little different with the binding. I used a golden Warp & Weft linen that has a hint of light pink. Then I big stitched the binding by hand with a light pink.

The Gondor Quilt pattern is now available for purchase here.

We go on our road trip about a week from today and I cannot wait to cuddle with this quit in a tent.
