Fleeting Quilt Pattern

The Fleeting Quilt pattern came to be because I wanted to be able to showcase a fabric or design in the center, and then have your eye move around the quilt. An hour later, I had a quilt top draft drawn, the math partially done, and the doors to my fabric cabinet open and I was pulling fabric.

I wanted to use Maureen Cracknell’s (from AGF) floral print from her Love Story Collection as the center piece. I wanted an even balance of warm and cool colors so I pulled pinks/reds and blues in equal measure. I grabbed many of my coveted low volume whites and I laid out a fabric pull of mostly scraps and old stash (I have NO idea what most of the fabric is) that was very heavy on a color scheme rarely used by me – red and teal.

A LOT of flying geese later I had the pieces ready to make my quilt top.

Laying out the quilt top was a bit of a challenge because I still don’t have my design wall up after the move, so I laid it out on the floor. The ultimate quilt lover, my corgi Arwen, simply felt that she had to be involved. Seriously though, this dog LOVES quilts. I named my last quilt pattern after her – the Arwen Quilt.

My husband was busy, so Arwen and I arranged the quilt blocks together which honestly turned into a strange internal philosophical debate – does the dog sitting on the quilt mean – she is locking it into place because she loves it? Or do her legs mean she is kicking it off and it needs to go somewhere else? I definitely over thought that. Next time I will wait for Eli (my husband) to have some time to lay out a quilt with me – cause I am pretty sure a fly on the wall of that room would have been very concerned about my mental state.

With Arwen’s assistance I sewed all the blocks together. She is clearly laying on top of the blocks so that nothing happens that results in them moving. Which is a bit of problem when I need to move blocks to sew them together, but that is what dog treats are for y’all.

When I finished this quilt top I immediately was like I HAVE to have more Maureen Cracknell Love Story for the backing. I managed to track down some teal floral from the collection that I am genuinely in love with.

My moms dog Leia. I was dog sitting when I took quilt top pictures.

I quilted a diagonal cross hatch using the flying geese as guidelines. It is so easy to do on flying geese quilts. Blog post on how to do this here.

I decided on a red and white stripped binding because anytime stripped binding is remotely appropriate, it WILL be used. Blog post on how I bind quilt is here.

I had a lot of issues getting a good finished quilt picture because every weekend after I finished this quilt and was home during daylight hours, it was overcast. So the picture below is as good as it will get… for now.

The Fleeting Quilt pattern releases this Saturday Dec. 5. The difficulty level for this pattern is advanced beginner. It is so easy to make this quilt pattern bigger if you desire. It is a fabulous large scrap and stash buster quilt. I honestly want to make at least 5 more after seeing my testers quilts. I think Arwen agrees – more quilts must be made!

Arwen says – “make me more quilts please”

Happy sewing!
