How to Machine Quilt Diagonal Crosshatch on a Flying Geese Quilt (using the geese as guidelines)

I LOVE diagonal crosshatch quilting, but I feel like it is honestly way too much work to mark all the lines if you can’t use the quilt top itself as a guide. Flying geese quilts are the best quilts to use as a guide. You just need to use a ruler and a Hera marker.

This lazy method (is it lazy? Or just a classic case of work smarter, not harder? Whose to say – me. I am to say and it’s being smart šŸ˜‰ works on classic flying geese patterns, patterns where geese are going in multiple directions, or my Fleeting Quilt pattern. I preformed this diagonal crosshatch quilting on my Fleeting Quilt top pictured below (pattern available Dec. 5).

Start in the middle of the quilt and choose a direction to start with. Line your ruler up with the edge of geese (pictured below) and mark all the sections that are between the geese edges with your Hera marker. When you are done marking it, quilt on it with your walking foot.

Once you finish your line, mark your next line. I tend to mark three lines at a time and more when I get to the edge. You can mark more than three at a time, but I like breaking it up periodically for some reason.

Continue this process until you have all of the lines going in the same direction completed.

Then use the other sides of the geese to go in the opposite direction to start your crosshatch. You use exactly the same method, you are just making diagonal crosshatch lines now.

Continue doing this until all of your crosshatch lines are completed.

That is it! Arwen wishes you a happy sewing adventure!

  1. Hi SpringDaisy,
I am new to quilting. I just finished a flying geese top and found your post while looking for ideas for machine straight line quilting.
I like your quilt and wanted to know what color thread you used. It looks white on the white material but green on the green and red Iā€™m the red.
    Thank you.
