Eowyn Quilt Pattern

The Pattern

The Eowyn Quilt pattern combines machine piecing and English Paper Piecing (EPP).

The Eowyn Quilt has fabric diamonds (without EPP) that really showcase the fabric you use. If you have fabric that you love and haven’t been able to make yourself cut into, this is the quilt pattern for it.

Development

The Eowyn Quilt pattern is my third quilt pattern that combines English paper piecing (EPP) applique and machine sewing. This makes for a much faster finish that traditional EPP patterns.

When I was originally sketching out this quilt pattern I had it narrowed down to two versions. I realized that both versions were different and I loved them both enough to make them into two different patterns so the Eowyn and Eomer Quilt patterns were brought into existence.

My two favorite types of quilts are quilts that use scraps or fat quarters (FQs). The Eomer uses scraps (and other precuts) and the Eowyn uses fat quarters. Between the two patterns pretty much all the precuts in existence are accounted for.

The Eowyn Quilt pattern combines EPP blocks and diamonds that truly showcase the fabric used. I love that the EPP and the fabric diamonds somehow don’t compete for competition. They’re both the stars of the show and what an elegant show my cover quilt makes.

The Name

The Eowyn Quilt pattern is named after Eowyn from Lord of the Rings. She is a fierce human warrior with one of the most epic movie quotes of all time.

The sister quilt pattern to the Eowyn Quilt is the Eomer Quilt.

Eowyn is Eomer’s sister in Lord of the Rings. Get it? Sister patterns. I think it is hilarious.

Fabric Requirements & Size

The quilt pattern has two sizes:

• Baby Quilt (41″ x 47″)
• Throw Quilt (62″ x 71″)

The quilt pattern is mostly written for fat quarters (FQs), but there are scrap fabric requirements included within the pattern.

Difficulty Level

The difficulty level for this pattern is Confident Beginner. This is in reference to the difficulty for over all construction, machine piecing, and EPP.

EPP

English Paper Piecing (EPP) is a form of hand sewing. I have a series of introductory blog posts on it that can be found on my website and are linked in the Eowyn pattern. Quilts that are entirely EPP take a relatively long time to complete, so this pattern offers an opportunity to make an EPP quilt far quicker than you normally could. This pattern uses 1” hexagons for the EPP blocks, which are a classic and extremely popular size/shape. This is great because you can reuse the paper pieces for a future project (EPP papers are usually good for 2-4 projects, depending on how well you treat them). This is a perfect EPP starter pattern. I strongly urge EPP beginners to use an applique pattern to start with because you can finish the project relatively quickly, so it is not as big of a commitment.

Other Great Things Worth Mentioning

The pattern has a five page section ‘Tips for Perfect Diamond Corners’. This section has a various techniques with pictures included to help you get achieve perfect corners even if it is your first time sewing diamonds.
