Temperature Quilt Pattern & Tutorial

The temperature quilt pattern and tutorial release February 4th, 2022!

What is a Temperature Quilt?

A temperature quilt assigns specific fabric to temperature ranges. Any quilt block and any fabric can be used. Traditionally temperature quilts are made with a rainbow spectrum of colors, but they do not have to be. My color scheme (pictured below) is a nontraditional color scheme, but I feel that it will give the quilt a classic look while further encapsulating the year 2022.

What Inspired this Pattern?

I have loved the idea of making a temperature quilt ever since I first saw one. I decided this year was finally the year to go for it. Since my background is in environmental science, I am VERY familiar with accessing climate data. I took my science background and combined it with my ability to write quilt patterns and the ‘Temperature Quilt Pattern & Tutorial’ was created.

What’s Included:

  • An excel document to record temperature data in
  • Finding historical temperature data
  • Multiple templates for planning fabric for temperature ranges
  • My temperature fabric plan
  • Generalized fabric requirements
  • Block ideas
  • Block storage
  • HST temperature quilt
  • Mini sawtooth star temperature quilt

Historical Temperature Data

The method I have in the tutorial for retrieving temperature data accesses US federal climate data so it only works for locations within the United States. It does not work for other countries.

You use the method to find a data collection station close to your geographic location. You can then choose what time you want temperature data for.

  • Example 1: Jacksonville, Florida in 2022
  • Example 2: Denton, Texas in 1990

You have to have a data station near where you want data from and it needs to be during a time frame data was collected. So you couldn’t do an extremely remote location in 1890, but as long as you are going for a modern time the possibilities are endless. You could go back in time to your first year in college, or your child’s first year of life. Literally however you want to use it.

    • Large throw quilt
    • Block diagram and instructions
    • Suggested fabric requirements
  2. Mini Sawtooth Star Version:
    • Intermediate level
    • King sized quilt
      • (you could easily do part of a year to size it down)
    • Block diagram and instructions
    • Suggested fabric requirements

Summary

I truly feel that this pattern offers the flexibility to make a temperature quilt however you desire, while giving you enough helpful information and tools to make the process of your unique quilt as easy as possible.

It releases February 4th 2022!
